Kathmandu. Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Arju Rana Deuba has said that mountains are a common source of mankind. In her welcome address at the inaugural session of ‘Sagarmatha Sambad’ organized for the first time on ‘Climate Change, Mountains and the Future of Mankind’ here today, she said the mountains have become a source of fresh water for millions of people.
Stating that the Himalayas are bearing the biggest burden of climate-induced disruption today, she said the melting of glaciers has increased rapidly due to the effects of climate. This has had a negative impact on the daily life of the Himalayan community, he said. “Climate-induced disasters are shaking the very foundations of human existence and livelihoods,” he said. Drought and fires have caused immense pain to human beings. ’
Minister Rana said that this dialogue is an attempt to provide an opportunity to meditate and introspect and prevent climate-related disasters from the mountains to the sea and from the northern to southern hemisphere. Nepal, a country with fragile mountain ecosystem, is facing the brunt of climate change, she said. “As conscious custodians of our rivers, forests and mountains, we are contributing more than our capacity to the health of the earth. However, we are forced to face the heavy and disproportionate burden of the negative effects of climate change,” said Dr Rana.
Noting that there are incredible examples of local communities fighting hard against climate change, she stressed the need to recognize and value their local knowledge and life experiences, and to be adaptive. He said that there could not be any collaboration between the government, concerned bodies and civil society at the international level. Nepal has committed to achieve the goal of zero greenhouse gas emission by 2045. Hydropower, a clean form of energy, has become the largest source of electricity in Nepal. Minister Rana said that Nepal’s pioneer natural resource management program, Community Forest, has not only helped Nepal to significantly increase its forest area, but has also emerged as a model of participating conservation around the world.
“Climate change is a global crisis that transcends national boundaries. “We cannot expect any less than a global coalition based on justice and solidarity to have an impact on the existential crisis that climate change brings in its way,” she said. ’
He said the world should acknowledge the risks of countries like Nepal and support targeted mitigation and adaptation strategies through the provision of climate finance, adaptation cooperation and technology transfer. Minister Rana said that this forum will provide an opportunity to consider the relationship between climate change and regional and international peace, security and stability, as well as the effects of climate change on migration, food security, humanitarian crisis and disaster risks. She expressed confidence that the dialogue will help stimulate new ideas, promote cooperation and mobilize greater political will to counter the threat of climate change and the existential threat of the future of mankind.
