Kathmandu. The CPN(UML)’s Central Disaster Management and Volunteering Department has started discussions with the aim of making the Sagarmatha Dialogue a success.

Organizing a political commitment programme for localization of Sagarmatha Dialogue in Kathmandu on Wednesday, the Department said it has started discussions with the objective of making sagarmatha dialogue a success.

Speaking during the discussion, UML leader Khimlal Bhattarai said the Sagarmatha Dialogue would also be important for mitigating the impact of climate change. Stating that the government would give suggestions on the findings of the discussions held by the Department, he said discussions would be held on the negative impacts arising out of climate change and ways to solve them.

He said, “Climate change is a serious issue coming up in the international world through the Sagarmatha Dialogue. The dialogue will discuss the negative impacts of climate change and ways to resolve them. Today, there is a discussion on climate change all over the world. Solutions are being discussed and sought. ’

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Executive Officer of the Investment Board Sushil Gyewali said that the necessary work has not been done in the pre-disaster preparedness and disaster risk reduction work.

Stating that Nepal has done excellent work in emergency rescue and relief, he said it was necessary for the three levels of government to move ahead with necessary coordination in this regard.

Stating that it was necessary to think about the impact of climate while carrying out development works, he said, “We established the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority as there was a reconstruction authority to innovate two or three things. But there was a problem when it was within the framework of the Ministry of Home Affairs. I think it needs to be discussed at the political level. When this entity was within the framework of the Ministry of Home Affairs, it could not take a decision of that level for small decision making. In emergency response, we have very good capacity in the rescue work of a good kind. Nepal has been able to work at the best level. But the kind of understanding that should have been done in pre-disaster preparedness, disaster risk reduction, post-disaster reconstruction and rehabilitation could not be done. ’

CEO Gyawali said that climate change is affecting agricultural production. It is important to plan how to avoid it, he added. He said that the impact of climate change could be minimized by formulating a clear roadmap and plan at the grassroots level.
