Kathmandu. India has suspended civilian flights at 24 airports in its northern region after a war with nuclear-armed rival Pakistan.

Nearly 50 people have been killed, mainly in Pakistan, after India launched air strikes targeting “terrorist camps” on Wednesday, triggering the worst fighting between the two neighbours in decades.

The Indian government on Thursday night released a list of 24 airports where civilian flights have been suspended. The airports are located in cities such as Jodhpur, Ludhiana and Amritsar, near the western border with Pakistan.

Some of India’s largest airlines, including Air India, IndiGo and SpiceJet, have cancelled more than 100 flights since Wednesday. Local media reported that the suspension of civil flights is likely to be lifted on Saturday morning.

Indian airlines have issued an advisory asking passengers flying from other airports to arrive at least three hours before departure, citing government notices of increased security measures. Wednesday’s attacks come two weeks after New Delhi accused Islamabad of supporting attacks on tourists in the Indian-administered part of disputed Kashmir.

Pakistan has denied the accusations. Since then, the arch-rivals have fired drones and missiles, as well as artillery, across their disputed border in Kashmir. The violence has raised fears of a wider conflict between the neighbours.
