Kathmandu. Ganesh Karki, Chairman of Independent Producers Association of Nepal (IPPAN), has said that the Electricity Regulatory Commission (ERC) is an institution created to regulate the energy sector, so it should work more effectively.
Speaking on the occasion of the sixth annual celebration of the ERC held in the capital on Thursday, he said that the commission has made efforts to move forward not only the private and non-private sectors of Nepal but also stakeholders on related issues.
He also praised the government, saying that some important work has been done since the current government came to power. He said that the leadership of the Energy Minister has drawn up a roadmap to generate 28,500 megawatts of electricity by 2035. Karki said that being able to produce and sell electricity for Bangladesh is a great achievement.
He said that the Regulatory Commission will play an important role in generating 28,500 kilowatt-hours of electricity. Stating that the Ministry of Energy should be made a powerful ministry, he also said that one-stop policies should be introduced.
He said that everything should be included in the budget through the Ministry of Energy. Karki said, “This government has done a historic job. Some even call me a spokesperson. I believe that we should rise above that and work. The Prime Minister has adopted the slogan of Prosperous Nepal, Happy Nepalis.” The energy sector is the only sector to achieve that.’
He said that it would be meaningful to create an environment for Nepali people to invest up to 500,000 without collateral to involve the entire population of Nepal. Stating that there are currently more than 500 companies and around the same number of hydropower companies are coming up, he said that every time a shareholder changes, there is a compulsion to seek approval from different places. Karki said that the commission should not be sitting on such a task. According to him, there is a relevant body that will look into it.
According to him, it is necessary for the Electricity Regulatory Commission to think about how to consume 28,500 electricity with regulation and how to trade electricity. Stating that the Electricity Authority looks at various documents while preparing PPAs, Karki said that the same process will be duplicated by the Electricity Regulatory Commission. He said that it is necessary to do such work at one place.
