Agency. US President Donald Trump on Thursday expressed his desire to rename both May 8 and November 11 as ‘Victory Day’ in his latest attempt to change the country’s name. ‘I am renaming May 8 as Victory Day in World War II and November 11 as Victory Day in World War I,’ he wrote on his Truth social platform.

Victory Day, celebrated on May 8 by the European Union and on May 9 in former Soviet countries, marks the anniversary of the formal acceptance of Germany’s unconditional surrender. The war continued in Asia until Japan surrendered in early September 1945 after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

However, some in the United States celebrate the occasion. May 8 is not a public holiday or widely celebrated as in Europe. “Many of our allies and friends are celebrating May 8 as Victory Day, but we did more than any other country to bring about a victorious outcome in World War II,” Trump’s post said.

November 11 was originally named ‘Armistice Day’ by former US President Woodrow Wilson to commemorate the anniversary of the 1918 armistice that ended armed conflict in World War I. It is now a public holiday in the United States, known as Veterans Day, and is intended to honor Americans who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

“We won both wars, no one came close to us in terms of strength, bravery, or military prowess, but we never celebrate anything—that’s because we no longer have leaders who know how to,” Trump said. “We are starting to celebrate our victories again.”

In World War II, the Soviet Union was an ally of Britain and the United States against Nazi Germany. Russia was the largest of the 15 republics in the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union suffered the most casualties in the war. More than 20 million were killed in the Soviet Union.

The White House has not yet formally issued an executive order or proclamation changing the name of the holiday.
