Kathmandu. After a long tug-of-war, the recommendation committee is gearing up to finalize the appointment process of the 18th governor of the Nepal Rastra Bank. The committee is going to move the process forward by finalizing the governor on Monday (Baishakh 22).

The Council of Ministers meeting held on Wednesday has appointed former Governor Mahaprasad Adhikari to the recommendation committee. The letter appointing Adhikari to the committee will be sent by the Council of Ministers and the Prime Minister’s Office on Thursday. Now, the recommendation committee includes Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Poudel, Mahaprasad Adhikari and economist Dr. Bishwa Poudel.

The committee is preparing to meet on Friday or Sunday after the recommendation committee completes its work. The recommendation committee is preparing to recommend the names of Deputy Governor of the National Bank, Neelam Dhungana, Director of the National Bank, Dr. Gunakar Bhatta and Gyanendra Dhungana.

A high-ranking source told Singha Durbar, “It has been agreed to make Gunakar Bhatta the governor, Neelam and Gyanendra will be recommended as three people, the new governor will probably be decided by the cabinet meeting on Monday.” Although it is said that an agreement has been reached on the new governor, distrust is growing between the leaders of the main ruling party, Nepali Congress and CPN-UML.

Prime Minister Oli has been shocked after Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba adopted a strategy of Congress claiming all appointments. Prime Minister Oli had believed that the UML would definitely get the governor after the Nepali Congress took over the Securities and Exchange Board, Insurance Authority and Nepal Stock Exchange under the Ministry of Finance. But Oli was shocked when the Congress sought a role in the governor recommendation committee. Prime Minister Oli, who had taken a stand to keep the governor no matter what, was upset when President Deuba said that he would topple the government if he did not get the governor.

After Deuba warned that the government would not be in his hands if he did not get the governor, Prime Minister Oli had discussed with his close leaders. During the discussion, they discussed whether his party would take the governor and leave the government or leave the governor and maintain power for some time. Leaders close to Oli had suggested to Prime Minister Oli to prolong the governor appointment process as much as possible. Similarly, their second-tier leaders criticized them for not being able to talk to the leaders of the CPN-Maoist Center, the CPN-Unified Socialist Party, and the National Independent Party.

The second-tier leaders of the Nepali Congress are continuously discussing with the opposition parties for power cooperation. But UML has not been able to make any progress.

After realizing that the Congress will claim the posts of Chief Secretary and Election Commission after the Governor, Prime Minister Oli has become suspicious of the Congress.
