Kathmandu. The interim order issued by the Supreme Court stating that a person above the age of 65 cannot become the governor of the Nepal Rastra Bank has been continued. A joint bench of Justices Til Prasad Shrestha and Bal Krishna Dhakal has continued the interim order.
Advocates Vishal Thapa and Pratibha Upreti had filed a writ petition on Chaitra 31, alleging that the government had revised the criteria for appointing a person above the age of 65 as the governor. A single bench of Justice Nityananda Pandey had issued an interim order in that writ.
The case was heard by a joint bench of Justices Shrestha and Dhakal on Wednesday. Similarly, Rastra Bank Director Dr. Advocates Thapa and Upreti had filed a case alleging that Gunakar Bhatta was going to be made the governor. The judges did not want to enter into the case.
The judges did not enter into the case after they did not find any evidence to prove whether the government had started the process or not. Dr. Bhatta has already resigned from the directorship of the National Bank.
However, his resignation has not been accepted by the acting Chief Governor Neelam Dhungana. It is not legally clear whether the resignation will be accepted or not to become the governor. Former Governor Vijayanath Bhattarai, a member of the Governor Selection Committee formed by the government on Chaitra 11, has resigned from the committee.
He resigned saying that middlemen manipulated the governor selection process and tried to rubber stamp him.
