Kathmandu. More than 100,000 taxpayers have become non-filers in the Internal Revenue Service. The number of taxpayers who do not submit tax returns on time is increasing.
With the increasing pressure on the state for resources, the Internal Revenue Department has made public the names of taxpayers who have not submitted tax returns. The department has made public the list saying that 102,232 companies have not filed taxes. The list made public by the department includes taxpayers from small to large. Issuing a notice, the department has asked to submit tax returns as soon as possible.
These non-filers include those who do not submit income tax, value added tax (VAT), and excise duty returns. The department has said that immediate action will be taken against taxpayers who do not submit VAT details.
Sub-section (8) of Section 17 of the Value Added Tax Act, 2052, provides for the publication of the name of a taxpayer who does not submit tax details for 6 consecutive months, withholding the amount of tax due from such a taxpayer if any, and even suspending his/her registration. According to that provision, the department has given an ultimatum to submit the details within 15 days of the issuance of the notice.
The department has urged taxpayers to regularize their transactions by contacting the Inland Revenue Office or Taxpayer Service Office where their business is registered and submitting their tax details within 15 (fifteen) days from the date of publication of the notice. Otherwise, the department has warned that the registration of the mentioned taxpayers will be suspended and the VAT deduction will be withheld in accordance with Sub-section (8) of Section 17 of the Value Added Tax Act, 2052.
