Kathmandu. The 19th meeting of the Medical Education Commission held today under the chairmanship of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has decided that private medical colleges should provide increased subsistence allowance to resident doctors from the date of the decision and that resident doctors should withdraw their agitation and return to their work and studies.
The 16th meeting of the Commission held on Magh 25 had decided that private medical colleges should provide a monthly subsistence allowance of Rs 48,737 to resident doctors of PGs, similar to the government.
The meeting has accepted the report with suggestions of the 11-member task force formed to review the number of seats and fee structure of undergraduate MBBS and BDS, keeping in mind the demands of private medical colleges.
Prime Minister and The report was handed over to the Commission Chairman, Prime Minister Oli, by Dr. Deepak Kafle, the coordinator of the task force and Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, in a meeting held at the Office of the Council of Ministers, Singha Durbar.
The report has paved the way for the formation of a technical committee as per the provisions of the Medical Education Act, 2075 BS to review the number of seats and fees based on the determination of standards and criteria. For this, a technical committee has been formed under the coordination of Prof. Dr. Sujan Babu Marhatta of the Commission’s Directorate of Planning, Coordination and Academic Advancement as per the Act.
The committee will include Prof. Dr. Divya Singh Shah, Senior Chartered Accountant Mahesh Garagain, Chartered Accountant Santosh Khanal, and Undersecretaries of the Ministries of Education, Health, and Finance on behalf of the experts.
After the Association of Private Medical and Dental Colleges refused to provide a subsistence allowance to resident doctors on a par with the government due to lack of assurance of resources, the Commission has held three meetings in the meantime and reached a solution on the initiative of Prime Minister Oli. .
After the meeting, the commission’s co-chair, Minister for Education, Science and Technology Raghuji Pant, said that the resident doctors should withdraw from the agitation as private medical colleges have decided to provide subsistence allowance from the date of the 16th meeting. He said that the process for fee review will also be initiated.
