‘A new agricultural policy to increase exports will be introduced soon’: Minister Adhikari

Kathmandu. Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Development Ramnath Adhikari has said that a new agricultural policy will be introduced soon to commercially replace imports and increase exports in the country.

At a program organized by the National Tea and Coffee Development Board on the occasion of the 29th National Tea Day today, he said that policies related to production and productivity increase, agricultural subsidies and agricultural finance have been prioritized for the overall development of the agricultural sector.

Say that the said policy will be submitted to the Council of Ministers in a few days for approval, and he expressed confidence that the policy will help solve the overall problems of the agricultural sector and make this sector more self-reliant. Stating that the development of the agricultural sector is necessary for the sustainable development of the country, Minister Adhikari clarified that the government has prioritized agricultural production, increase in farmers’ income, and economic prosperity.

He said that Nepali tea would be promoted in the national and international markets by further encouraging the tea industry, which has created about 60,000 jobs. Agriculture Secretary Govinda Prasad Sharma expressed his commitment to provide necessary facilities to the farmers concerned to increase the use of technology in agriculture, production of quality goods and production of exportable goods.

Tea expert Chandra Bhushan Subba presented a working paper on the characteristics of various types of tea produced in the country and the demand for Nepali tea in the global market.

This year, a tea exhibition was also held on the occasion of the day organized with the main slogan ‘Healthy Tea, Sustainable Market, the Basis of Prosperous Nepal’. Discussions were held between tea farmers, cooperatives, and industrialists from various districts at the exhibition.

According to the Board’s statistics for the fiscal year 2080-81, a total of 20,160 hectares of land have been planted with tea in Nepal. During this period, 27 million kg of ready-made tea has been produced. There are 15,203 tea farmers in Nepal. It is said that tea worth about Rs 3.57 billion has been exported in the last nine months.
