Chitwan. Chitwan National Park is going to start collecting eggs from the nests of Gharial crocodiles in the Rapti River from today. According to the park’s information officer, Abinash Thapa Magar, 18 nests have been identified and the collection of eggs from those nests is going to start.

The search for nests in the Rapti River area was started from Chaitra 1. He said that the collection of eggs from the found nests is going to start. The park had searched for nests in the Rapti River until Baisakh 10. Last year, eggs were taken from eight nests out of the 16 nests found in the Rapti River. He said that more than 200 eggs are expected to be collected this year.

This year, the collection of eggs will start from the east of the Rapti River. Last year, 247 eggs were collected and hatched. He said, “We estimate that more eggs will be hatched this year since many nests have been found now.” The park has established a crocodile breeding center and collects eggs from endangered nests on the river banks and brings them to the breeding center for hatching. The hatched babies are raised and then released into various rivers.

The gharial crocodiles raised here have been released into rivers including Narayani, Rapti, Karnali. Recently, they have been released only in Rapti and Narayani. After the breeding center was established in 1978, the crocodile babies were raised and released into the river from 1981.
