Kathmandu. Former finance ministers have said that the budget for the upcoming fiscal year 2082.083 should be of a qualitative nature to improve the economy. They said this while speaking at the Finance Committee meeting under the House of Representatives held at Singha Durbar on Wednesday.

In the meeting, former Finance Minister Barshaman Pun said that the development and progress made by the liberal economy in the 1990s should be assimilated and the distortions seen should be corrected in the upcoming budget.

He said that the liberal economic policy practiced in the past and the market economy alone cannot meet the current needs and insisted on moving to an interdependent economy in the present time. He suggested the government to move forward by prioritizing agriculture, water resources, tourism, industry and IT sectors.

In the meeting, former Finance Minister Gyanendra Bahadur Karki emphasized that the upcoming budget should be one that wins the trust of the people. He said that some laws have been amended through ordinances to make the private sector dynamic, but that alone will not be enough.

He suggested the government to bring a budget that will boost the self-confidence of the private sector. Former Finance Minister Karki said that no matter how good the budget is, it will not be implementable if confidence in the economy cannot be restored, and he believed that a balanced, production-oriented, employment-enhancing budget should be brought.

He also said that the upcoming budget should fulfill the aspirations of the people and accelerate development and construction.
