Kathmandu. The Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) is going to hold a general convention. After receiving the mandate of the esteemed Supreme Court to unite the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA), which has been embroiled in controversy for a long time, and hold a general convention, the NRNA High-Level Committee formed under the chairmanship of Dr. Shesh Ghale has decided to hold a general convention in Kathmandu from Baisakh 20 to 22 (May 3, 5).
In order to ensure that as many NRNAs as possible can participate in the NRNA’s unity convention, free membership was arranged and the date for applying for membership was extended repeatedly. More than 16,000 people have applied for membership on the NRNA High-Level Committee’s web portal, and if we add the number sent by the NCCs to the High-Level Committee, it is more than 47,000.
Adding the numbers from the High-Level Committee’s web portal and the NCCs, more than 63,000 have become members. Similarly, more than 2,500 people have applied to participate in the Unity Convention as delegates by Sunday (April 20). They will be able to apply to become delegates by April 22 (11:59 PM Nepal time). We have urged all registered members of NRNA to apply to become delegates within the said period and also to physically be present in Kathmandu to participate in the process of making the new statute of the organization and selecting the new working committee.
Those who have become delegates are free to claim leadership themselves. We have taken this as a democratization of NRNA. To become delegates, it is mandatory to deposit money in the bank.
It has been informed that 100 rupees will have to be paid to become delegates. Preparations are progressing rapidly by forming various subcommittees to organize the historic unity general convention. So far, 14 meetings of the high-level committee have been held, and representatives of the Government of Nepal are also participating in those meetings. Despite repeated correspondence from the Supreme Court’s decision implementation directorate, the high-level committee called for membership on its own web portal as access to the association’s secretariat, MIS system, etc. was not provided, and also requested the National Coordination Councils for cooperation.
An election committee has been formed to elect a new working committee (International Coordination Council) (ICC) for the Unity General Convention. Retired Major Damar Ghale and Advocate Ashish Upreti are part of the election committee formed under the coordination of Ghimire. The election committee has also started its work. We have also fixed the fees for those who are candidates for leadership. The statement also mentions that an election monitoring committee has been formed under the coordination of former president of the association and member of the high-level committee Devman Hirachan to make the election clean, transparent and dignified.
The NRNA, established in 2003, has now reached an important turning point. During this period, increasing investment in Nepal, protecting the rights and interests of non-resident Nepalis living abroad by staying in close contact with the Nepal government, and other social welfare works have been completed. But we cannot forget the fact that internal disputes within the association have had to be resolved at various levels of courts.
The process of delegates and friends coming to Kathmandu has already begun. Member Secretary Rabina Thapa has also requested the delegates to contact the High-Level Committee Secretariat if they require any information or information.
