Kathmandu. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said as he left Paris after meetings with European officials that Washington must decide soon whether a ceasefire in Ukraine is possible.
“We need to assess in the next few days whether this can be done, because if it is not, I think we will move forward with other plans,” he told reporters at Bourget Airport.
“If a ceasefire is not possible, there are other priorities that we need to focus on.” “The United States has been helping Ukraine for the past three years and we want it to end, but this is not our war,” Rubio said. US President Donald Trump has ignored Kiev and European allies after agreeing to start peace talks after a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, while European powers are keen to stay in the talks.
Trump’s efforts to end the war have failed and Putin has rejected a full ceasefire. Rubio said European officials were “very helpful and constructive in their ideas” in the talks on Thursday.
“We want them to play a coordinating role in the talks. I think Britain, France and Germany can help us move the talks forward and then move it closer to a solution,” he said. He also said he hoped European countries would consider lifting sanctions imposed on Russia after its invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
“Part of the sanctions against Russia, and if this is part of the agreement, many of them are European sanctions that we cannot lift,” he said. European countries agreed last month to extend sanctions on Russia instead of lifting them.
