Japan’s trade deficit is $36.6 billion

Agency. Japan suffered a trade deficit of 36.6 billion US dollars in 2024, government data showed on Thursday. The value of exports rose for the fourth consecutive year to a total of 108.93 trillion yen in the fiscal year that ended in March. Japan’s exports rose 5.9 percent last year.

The highest level since comparable data was first collected in 1979.

Imports rose 4.7 percent from a year earlier to 114.16 trillion yen, the Finance Ministry said in a preliminary report, led by personal computers from the United States and smartphones from China.

Japan ran a trade deficit with China of 7.05 trillion yen, up 18.7 percent from a year earlier. Japan’s exports to China rose 3.4 percent to 18.89 trillion yen, while imports rose 7.1 percent to 25.94 trillion yen.

Japan’s trade surplus with the United States fell 1.3 percent to 9.01 trillion yen. This is compared to the previous year, with exports increasing 3.8 percent to 21.65 trillion yen, and imports also increasing 7.7 percent to 12.64 trillion yen.

Japan’s trade deficit with the European Union continued for the 13th consecutive year. Japan’s deficit with the EU last year was 2.53 trillion yen.
