Kathmandu. The 18th meeting of the Medical Education Commission held today under the chairmanship of Prime Minister and Chairman of the Medical Education Commission KP Sharma Oli has formed an 11-member task force to review the number of seats and fee structure of MBBS and BDS in private medical colleges.

The task force was formed under the coordination of Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Dr. Deepak Kafle, to submit opinions and suggestions within 10 days from the meeting held at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, Singha Durbar.

The task force includes Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Population, Dr. Bikash Devkota, Dean of the Faculty of Medical Education under Tribhuvan University, Dr. Mohan Sharma, Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences under Kathmandu University, Dr. Manoj Humagain, experts Dr. Bhagwan Koirala, Dr. Ramesh Kant Adhikari, Dr. Divya Singh Shah, Dr. Mangal Rawal, Nepal Medical College President Dr. Anil Karki, and Association of Private Medical and Dental Colleges President Dr. Gyanendra Karki are members.

The Association of Private Medical and Dental Colleges had drawn the government’s attention to the difficulty in providing subsistence allowance to resident doctors on par with the government. Prime Minister Oli has called a meeting of the commission today after the students warned that they would protest again if they do not receive the allowance.

Earlier, the 16th meeting of the commission on Magh 25 had decided that private medical colleges should maintain a monthly subsistence allowance of 48,500, similar to the government (eighth level), addressing the demands of the resident doctors’ agitation.

After the task force studies and submits suggestions on the number of seats and fee increase, private medical colleges will have to pay the subsistence allowance prescribed by the commission accordingly and ‘matching’ regarding student admission will begin. The next meeting of the commission will be held on Baisakh 15.
