Kathmandu. China, the world’s second-largest economy, said on Wednesday it had appointed a new trade envoy, seeking to ease tensions that have escalated after China retaliated against US President Donald Trump’s tariff hikes on imports.

Beijing’s Ministry of Human Resources said in a statement on its website that Li Chenggang will serve as a representative for international trade negotiations and vice minister of commerce.

The 58-year-old Li, who previously served as Beijing’s ambassador to the World Trade Organization and permanent representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, is seen as a skilled diplomat. He holds a law degree from Peking University in China and the University of Hamburg in Germany.

He was appointed as Wang Shouwen’s successor, the ministry said in a statement. Wang participated in the 2020 China-US trade deal talks. Beijing and Washington have been locked in a tit-for-tat tariff war since Trump launched a global tariff offensive targeting Chinese imports in particular.

The US tariffs on China have reached 145 percent in retaliation, while Beijing’s tariffs on US goods have reached 125 percent. China said on Wednesday its economy grew 5.4 percent in the first quarter, better than expected.
