Nawalparasi. All the small bridges to be constructed on the eastern section of the Narayanghat-Butwal road under the East-West Highway, which is being expanded to four lanes, have been completed. All 22 small bridges to be constructed on the Gaindakot-Daunne section of the eastern section have been completed.

According to Engineer Shiva Khanal, Information Officer of the Narayanghat-Butwal Road Project Eastern Section, bridges shorter than 25 meters have been constructed as small bridges and bridges longer than 25 meters as large bridges. “Most of the small bridges that have been constructed have been opened for traffic,” he said. “The two large bridges that have been completed have also been opened for traffic.” Out of the 12 large bridges that need to be constructed in this section, five have been completed.

Information Officer Khanal said that vehicles have not been opened for traffic because the access road from the highway to the completed bridges is yet to be constructed. He informed that the construction of three more major bridges will be completed by the upcoming Asad.

‘All bridges except Jayashree in Gaindakot, Beldiha, Girubari in Madhyabindu and Arunkhola Bridge will be completed by the upcoming Asad,’ he said. ‘The manpower and equipment of all these four bridges are currently being mobilized for the construction of the Binayi Khola bridge in Binayi Triveni Rural Municipality, so the construction of those bridges will be delayed.’

A few weeks ago, the old bridge over Binayi Khola broke due to overloaded vehicles, causing problems in traffic operations, so the manpower is focused on the construction of the new bridge, according to Information Officer Khanal. .

While traveling on the approximately 65-kilometer road section from Gaindakot to Daunne, 52.5 kilometers of the road is blacktopped. ‘The bridges constructed in this section, Chormara Bazaar, Dumkibas and Daunne are yet to be blacktopped,’ he said. ‘Except for the four-kilometer area of Daunne, work is underway to complete the blacktopping in all other places before this rainy season.’

Information Officer Khanal informed that the progress on this section till mid-Chaitu is 63 percent. Out of the 114-kilometer road from Narayanghat to Butwal, the Narayanghat-Daunne (about 65 kilometers) road is being expanded by dividing it into the eastern section and the Daunne-Butwal (about 49 kilometers) road into the western section. It is said that additional service lanes will be constructed on both sides of the urban area of the road being expanded to four lanes, while 14 kilometers of the Daunne road will be expanded to three lanes. The Chinese construction company China State Construction Engineering Corporation Limited, which was contracted through a global tender, signed an agreement with the government in 2075 Magh and started the road expansion work on Chaitra 8.

The construction company has been repeatedly extending the deadline for the road expansion, citing problems such as four times the number of trees that had to be cut down than mentioned in the Detailed Project Report (DPR), late approval for tree cutting, delay in moving electricity poles, delay in availability of construction materials, and COVID-19 infection. The third extension of the road, which was contracted to be completed in 42 months (2079 Shrawan), is ending in Ashar.
