Ecotourism promotion is necessary in conservation areas: Forest Minister Shahi

Kathmandu. Minister for Forest and Environment Ain Bahadur Shahi Thakuri has said that ecotourism should be promoted in conservation areas across the country and linked to people’s livelihood. At the 30th Wildlife Week program organized by the Department of Wildlife Conservation and National Parks here today, he emphasized that the conservation sector should now increase its income by collecting revenue on its own.

Minister Shahi said, “Recently, with the increase in wildlife, the challenge of human-wildlife conflict and management has increased. We expect the cooperation of the Ministry of Forests, other agencies and all stakeholders to manage and minimize this.”

During the program, Secretary to the Ministry of Forests Dr. Deepak Kumar Kharal said that the department has successfully completed its conservation responsibilities and now it is time to work on human-wildlife conflict management. He also suggested that there should be uniformity in understanding and commitment towards conservation among the local community.

The Director General of the Department, Dr. Ramchandra Kandel, emphasized that everyone should work together to meet the challenges to protect the achievements made along with the increase in the number of wildlife. He also mentioned that the week-long program will make a great contribution to spreading public awareness for conservation.

In the program, Deputy Director General of the Department, Ved Kumar Dhakal, Senior Ecologist of the Department, Haribhadra Acharya, President of the Forest Technicians Association, Dr. Rakesh Karna, Director of the National Nature Conservation Trust, Dr. Chirinjivi Prasad Pokharel, Deputy Director General of the Department of Forest and Soil Conservation, Ajit Kumar Karna, Dr. Dinesh Neupane of the Geological Society of London (ZSL) Nepal, and others emphasized that human-wildlife conflict has become a challenge for conservation and emphasized that everyone should work towards a solution.
