Ilam. Suryodaya Municipality-4, Mr. Antuka Dilliram Mukhiya, who returned home after working as an ‘AC technician’ for 14 years in Qatar, had a desire to start a business in his village. He did not want to go abroad again. The money he earned abroad was used to buy land, get married, educate his children, and cover household expenses. Although he wanted to start a small business in his village, he was hesitant due to lack of investment.

‘Last year, Suryodaya Municipality provided a subsidy for raising chickens through the Remi program,’ said the village head. ‘The municipality provided a seven-day entrepreneurship training along with a subsidy of 40,000 rupees for raising chickens, so I started raising local breeds of chickens. Now to go abroad’

He has raised 600 chicks by building a well-organized coop with an investment of 150,000 and has earned a lot of income by selling chickens. Not only him, Indrajit Mukhiya, Sapana Subedi, Rajendra Giri, Biraj Tamang of the same ward have raised chickens with the grant from the municipality.

Sapana Subedi, who has lived in Saudi Arabia for three and a half years, feels sad when she remembers the suffering there. She is busy with tea farming along with raising goats and chickens, and is also enjoying agricultural work with the determination not to go abroad. She has given a grant of 100,000 from the municipality.

‘Not everyone who wants to do something in the village has the money to invest. After Remi gave money without interest, it has become easier to raise goats and chickens. You only have to pay back the principal in three years. There is no interest,’ she said while giving feed to the chickens.

Mayor Rana Bahadur Rai said that last year the municipality had made a self-employment procedure and arranged grants for those who wanted to start a business. He informed that interest-free loans of up to 100,000 rupees will be provided to individuals and 5 to 10 lakh rupees if they join a group or cooperative.
