Fire control efforts in Gorkha: Cash rewards for those who collect leaf moths

Gorkha. Bhimsenthapa Rural Municipality has implemented a ‘leaf collection’ program as an effort to control wildfires. Along with the implementation of the program, the municipality has also announced that it will provide cash rewards to those who collect leafhoppers.

According to Chitra Bahadur Adhikari, Chief Administrative Officer of the municipality, it has been decided to provide cash at the rate of Rs 2 per kilogram to those who collect leafhoppers from community forests within the municipality.

Anyone, toll development organization, club, group, cooperative organization, private firm and company will be able to collect leafhoppers in coordination with the concerned community forest user committee and ward office.

‘Collected leafhoppers are used to make organic fertilizer. The responsibility of its management and sale will be given to the concerned community forest and ward office,’ said the administrative officer, ‘The program is new, but the goal is to make it exemplary.’

The amount for collecting leafworms will be provided only after monitoring by the municipality. Administrative officer Adhikari informed that leafworms are currently being collected from most of the forests in the rural municipality under the program. He believes that this program will help protect the forest from fires.
