March 2. Two people, including a girl, died and 22 others were injured in a pickup van accident in Bharabaliya village of Lumbini Cultural Municipality-7 in Rupandehi.
12-year-old Asmita Yadav of Shivpurwa, Gaindhawa Rural Municipality-1, and 48-year-old Janmati Yadav of Shuddhodhan Rural Municipality-6, Manamateria, died when a pickup van (Lu1Cha2763) overturned at Shivagadhiya turn in Lumbini Cultural Municipality-7 on Monday evening, according to the District Police Office, Rupandehi.
Three of the injured are undergoing treatment at Life Care Hospital in Lumbini and 19 at Universal College of Medical Sciences Ranigaun in Bhairawa, according to the Area Police Office, Lumbini. .
According to eyewitness Sandeep Gupta, the van, which was moving at a high speed, overturned after reaching a bend. He informed that the accident occurred when 24 passengers in the van were returning home after completing the mundan ritual from the Mayadevi temple in Lumbini.
After the accident, the police took the driver, 26-year-old Ashok Pasi, of Bithuwa, Suddhodhan Rural Municipality-4, Kapilvastu district, into custody and started the necessary investigation, said Suraj Karki, spokesperson of the District Police Office Rupandehi and Deputy Superintendent of Police.
He mentioned that the accident occurred when the pickup van, which is used for carrying goods, was overloaded with passengers.
