Gorkha. The Himalayan villages of Chumchet, Chumling, Sipchet and other places in northern Gorkha have regained their electricity supply after the restoration of electricity.

After the village’s micro-hydropower project was swept away by a landslide, residents of about 205 households in Chumchet, Chumling, Sipchet, Kharong, Tazyu, Dumje, Renjam, Gho, Yarcho and Khargumba settlements in Chumanubri Rural Municipality-6 were forced to live by the light of firewood since last August. Local Lopsang Dharke Lama said that due to the lack of electricity in the village, the villagers were forced to live in darkness.

‘The landslide on August 12 washed away the Chumling and Chumchet micro-hydropower projects. At that time, the villagers worked together to repair the hydroelectric power plant and temporarily turned on the electricity. Later, the landslide that occurred in Bhadau again wiped out the hydroelectric power plant,’ he said. ‘Since Bhadau, electricity has been intermittently available, but it has not been regular. Now that the repairs have been completed and electricity has been on regularly for a week.’

Saroj Lama, ward chairman of Chumchet, Chumchet, Chumchubri-6, says that due to the lack of electricity, it has not only been possible to light the lamp, but also to thresh and grind the daily food grains. Now that electricity has been restored, it has become easier for the villagers to thresh and grind mustard, corn, wheat and other food grains.

‘There are not many trees here. Since there is no electricity in the village, we were forced to burn firewood. Even the few trees that were there were cut down,’ he said. The village does not have access to central electricity. The villagers used to light the lights of the 75 kilowatt Chumchet, Chumling Hydropower Project, which was completed on 15th Jestha 2079 BS.

Gopal Lama, the project chairman, says that the source, canal and tank of the small hydropower project produced in Chumchet Khola (Tamjakhola) were all washed away last Bhadau. After the collapse of the project, which was completed by the Kaduri Agricultural Aid Association British Gorkha, the villages under Chumnubri-6 were plunged into darkness. Lama says the landslide caused damage worth about 10 million.

‘The landslide in Sharan did not cause much damage, we had done minor repairs and turned on the electricity at that time,’ he said. ‘The landslide in Bhadau swept away the project from its foundation. It has been about a week since the complete repairs were completed and electricity was distributed.’

According to Lama, the project had been temporarily turning on electricity intermittently since Bhadau. Chairman Lama says that the Kaduri organization itself repaired the village and made it shine again.
