The government is preparing to appoint the governor of the Nepal Rastra Bank from Monday’s cabinet meeting. The appointment of the governor, which has been complicated for a long time, is expected to be completed today (Monday, Chaitra 25).
Although the Nepal Rastra Bank Act provides for the appointment of the governor one month before the vacancy occurs, the appointment has not been made even after a month has passed. After former Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank Mahaprasad Adhikari left on Friday (Chait 22) after completing his 5-year term, the National Bank has not even appointed an acting Governor.
Although there were attempts to appoint a Governor before Prime Minister Oli left for Thailand, an agreement could not be reached. Deputy Governors of Nepal Rastra Bank Bam Bahadur Mishra and Neelam Dhungana are in the race for the Governor. Similarly, Dr. Gunakar Bhatta, Dr. Prakash Shrestha, Ashok Sherchan and others are in the race.
