Nawalparasi. Farmers in West Nawalparasi are showing increasing interest in mushroom farming. Farmers who started farming on a trial basis a few years ago have now started commercial production.

45-year-old Tarendra Barma of Palhinandan Rural Municipality-3 has registered ‘Jai Maa Durge Multipurpose Agricultural Farm’ with the aim of doing something in his own country rather than going for foreign employment and has started mushroom farming commercially.

Burma said that he has been doing organic farming for the past 10 years after receiving training in mushroom farming at the Kushma Service Center. Stating that he grew mushrooms in 2,500 plastic bags on one acre of land at a cost of about 200,000, he shared his experience that he suffered some losses in the initial years due to his lack of knowledge about farming.

‘As production increases in winter, the market price decreases, while as the temperature increases in summer, mushroom production decreases. This year, if there are no problems in production and marketing, the target is to sell mushrooms worth Rs 500,000, he said.

Today, Sandesh Dhital, Horticulture Director of the Directorate of Agricultural Development, Butwal, Rabindranath Chaubey, Chief of the Agricultural Knowledge Center, Nawalparasi, and other employees inspected the mushroom farm produced by Burma.

Choubey, Chief of the Agricultural Knowledge Center, informed that 25 farmers are commercially cultivating mushrooms in the district. He said that the center is coordinating and collaborating for the convenience of the farmers.
