Skill development training on bamboo material manufacturing begins, will help increase income

Kathmandu. With the slogan ‘Bamboo makes life better’, a skill development training on bamboo material manufacturing has started in Badikhel, Godavari Municipality Ward No. 4, Lalitpur. The training, which will run until Chaitra 20, was jointly inaugurated on Wednesday by Godavari Municipality Mayor Gajendra Maharjan and Chinese Embassy Consul Chi Wang.

The training includes 22 trainees selected from different wards of Godavari Municipality. People from the Pahari and Nagarkoti communities living in Ward No. 4 have been made to participate in the training more. People from the Pahari and Nagarkoti communities in particular have been earning their livelihood by making bamboo materials. It is said that the training was organized to further develop their skills and make them professional.

The training, organized by Social Development Vision, Lalitpur, has been supported by the Goodwill Foundation headquartered in Xizang (Tibet), China, and the Nepal-China Kailash Culture Promotion Development Association in Kathmandu. The local partners are Godavari Municipality and Godavari Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Green Bamboo Creation has provided technical support for the training.

Addressing the inauguration program, Godavari Municipality Mayor Gajendra Maharjan said that Godavari has taken this training as an opportunity. Maharjan expressed his belief that skill development related to bamboo material production would help increase the income of the people in this area.

He stated that bamboo is the source of income for the people of Pahari and Nagarkoti communities of Ward No. 4 and expressed his belief that the training would help in producing better materials. He urged the trainees to learn carefully throughout the training period as this is the first time that international level training has been conducted in the ward. He said that they should move forward by producing good products and marketing bamboo materials.

Shiva Kumar Basnet, President of the organizing organization Social Development Vision, Lalitpur, said that the training was conducted to make people who are earning a living from bamboo materials in Godavari commercially. He mentioned that there is a market for bamboo materials not only in Nepal but also abroad, and mentioned that the goal is to create professionally skilled manpower.

Ma Zhejian, President of the Goodwill Foundation Tibet, said that the training will teach students how to make various materials from bamboo straws. He said that the training will teach how to make life economically prosperous through bamboo, and this will also lead to skill exchange between Nepal and China.

Chairman Ma recalled that he wanted to bring this program to Nepal a few years ago and expressed his confidence that now the skilled artisans here will have the opportunity to learn more advanced skills.

He added that this program will benefit the local community and added, “We want to promote the concept of bamboo as an alternative to plastic and encourage green development, which will make our environment more beautiful.” Through this training, Nepali friends will have the opportunity to better understand China and China’s bamboo culture.’

Godavari Chamber of Commerce President Rajan Maharjan recalled that he had the opportunity to see the prosperity China has achieved through bamboo in 2015 and expressed his belief that this program will be a milestone in increasing people-to-people and cultural relations between Nepal and China.

He said that the program will be successful with the efforts of all sectors. Similarly, Ward No. 4 Ward Chairman Sanubhai Nagarkoti said that people should strive to make bamboo products not only for livelihood but also to become entrepreneurs and traders. Li Yinhai and Sui Yanping, industrialists and senior artisans from Meishan city in Sichuan province, China, which has gained fame in bamboo products and furniture, will teach the trainees how to make lanterns and other items made from bamboo straws.

More than 50 species of bamboo are found in 63,000 hectares of land in Nepal. Various efforts have been started in Nepal to commercialize bamboo. The first National Bamboo Conference was also held in Diktel, Khotang, from Falgun 15 to 17.
