Chitwan. The National Maize Crop Research Program Rampur is preparing to recommend five varieties developed and tested here. Preparations are being made to recommend varieties that have been tested in various parts of the country for about 12 years.
Among the varieties to be recommended are the improved varieties BGBYPOP and TLBRSO-7F16. Tirtharaj Rijal, coordinator of the program, informed that these are currently under testing and are now being prepared to be recommended.
Preparations are being made to recommend the seeds to the Seed Quality and Control Center by Asar. The center approves and sends them to the National Seed Control Center. Rijal informed that after approval, it will be available for commercial production.
Through this program, 31 maize seed varieties have been recommended for advanced varieties in Nepal so far. Which are preferred by the Nepali people. Ganesh-1 and 2 varieties have been recommended for high hills, Manakamana-1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 varieties for mid-hills. Similarly, Rampur maize variety has been recommended for the Terai, he said. The maize that is being recommended now will be suitable for the Terai and mid-hill areas.
Farmers have also been recommended fast-maturing maize varieties. These include Arun-1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 varieties. These maize are ready in 80 to 90 days after planting. Other maize will take 120 to 150 days, says Rijal.
The office has so far recommended 10 varieties for hybrid maize. He said that three varieties are currently in the recommendation stage. The varieties to be recommended are CAH-1511, CAH-1187, CAH-19. Rijal said that since these maize have the ability to tolerate temperature, the work of recommending them for the districts of Inner Madhes and Terai is underway.
He said, ‘We have not recommended any variety of maize since 2077 BS, now we are preparing to recommend five varieties of maize.’ These three varieties are ready to be recommended next year. For the first time in Nepal, hybrid maize of the Gaurav variety was recommended in 2001. Since then, Rampur Hybrid-2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and other maize varieties have been recommended, he said.
Nine of the hybrid varieties are for the Terai and one is for the mid-hills. He said, ‘We are not only developing the lineage, we have been working on studies on pest control in maize and how to improve the soil.’
While eight varieties that farmers did not like have been removed from the list so far under the program, preparations have been started to recommend the removal of five varieties from the list. It is recommended to remove such varieties from the list that are not in vogue and are prone to diseases and pests.
This program first started seed production in 2033 BS by recommending Rampur Composite Maize seeds.
