Kathmandu. US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have held a more than two-hour telephone conversation about the war in Ukraine.
The White House said that the talks agreed to stop attacks on Ukraine’s energy and infrastructure for 30 days. Although the agreement indicates the first stage of peacemaking, it is not yet clear whether Ukraine will support the plan.
Putin has put forward a condition for a complete halt to foreign military aid to Ukraine for peace talks. While Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Putin’s proposal was an attempt to ‘just talk’. European countries have been worried after Trump indicated that talks were underway with Russia on ‘some asset sharing’. After the talks, Trump said on his social media that the talks had reached a ‘critical stage’. But he noted that many issues remain to be resolved.
At the same time, Putin reiterated his stance that NATO troops will not be deployed in Ukraine under any circumstances, claiming that his troops are constantly advancing on Ukrainian territory. US-Ukraine split – There has been a complete change in US policy on Ukraine since Trump’s return to the White House. US President Trump shocked the world by announcing that he had spoken to Putin last month.
This broke Western efforts to isolate the Russian president as long as the Russian military continued its invasion of Ukraine. He has spoken to the Russian president “many times” since then. He has repeatedly expressed his admiration for Putin in the past. However, no formal announcement of any talks has been made. Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, met with Putin for three hours in Moscow last Thursday to outline a joint ceasefire plan. The plan envisions a 30-day pause in the fighting.
But Washington’s improved relations with Moscow have come at a time when relations with Ukraine have become increasingly complicated. Trump had a row with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office on February 28. The dispute led to the United States temporarily suspending billions of dollars in military aid to Kiev.
Zelensky was later forced to agree to both a ceasefire plan and a deal giving the United States preferential access to Ukraine’s rare mineral deposits.
