Lalitpur. A copper roof is to be installed at Ratnakar Mahavihar in Patan. The Ratnakar Mahavihar Users’ Committee is going to replace the roof of the historic Mahavihar.
According to the Chairman of the Users’ Committee, Karunaratna Bajracharya, there are 16 Mahavihars in Lalitpur. The Ratnakar Mahavihar has a history of being moved from the Krishna Temple in the Patan Durbar area to Lalitpur Metropolitan City-16 by King Siddhinarsingh Malla 400 years ago.
He says, ‘Ratnakar Mahavihar is a historical heritage. According to a photo taken before 2038 BS, a zinc roof is visible on the Mahavihar. Since then, a zinc roof was installed. As the roof of the jingitti gets old, it leaks water quickly and monkeys can easily damage it, so we are currently installing a copper roof.’
Currently, the work of replacing the roof has begun with a total cost of 2898 thousand 879, with the work to be completed by next Baisakh. Accordingly, the Ratnakar Mahavihar Consumers’ Committee has allocated Rs 302,727 for heritage conservation under the Bagmati Province, Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Cooperatives, Tourism Development Project, out of a budget of Rs 2,596,151.
Kiran Bajracharya, Secretary of the Ratnakar Mahavihar Conservation Committee, said that every year, ropes are damaged while pulling the chariot of Rato Machhindranath, and water leaks are being faced as the roof of the jingit is getting old.
As per Newari customs, various programs under the Guthi are organized in the Mahavihar. As per the tradition of the Newari community, meetings and feasts are held in the Mahavihar.
