Ilam Mayor Kedar Thapa, while welcoming the distinguished guests, discussed the contribution of tea to Nepal-China relations. Stating that the relations between Nepal and China are strong on historical, cultural and commercial grounds, he recalled that Nepal’s tea was developed by bringing it here from China. He said, “Tea is our common heritage, which has brought the people of the two countries closer emotionally.”

Mayor Thapa mentioned that tea cultivation began in Nepal 150 years ago with the import of seeds from China, and said that tea here has played an important role in creating Nepal’s international identity.

Representatives of the Chinese Embassy have expressed their commitment to continue supporting the development of Nepal’s tea industry by further strengthening cooperation with Nepal. Mr. CA Yu, Economic Advisor to the Chinese Embassy in Nepal, said that China is particularly interested in promoting tea produced in Ilam and Koshi provinces.

Vice President Neupane said that the visit also highlighted the importance of the training organized for tea entrepreneurs in December 2024 in collaboration with the Ministry of Commerce of the Chinese Government and Zhangzhou College of Science and Technology.
