Kathmandu. China on Monday called for ‘talks’ to ease tensions in the Red Sea region after Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels claimed to have attacked a US aircraft carrier group twice in 24 hours.

“China opposes any move that escalates the situation in the Red Sea region,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning told a regular press briefing. The Houthi rebels said their attack was retaliation for the US attack. On Sunday, US President Donald Trump announced ‘decisive and powerful’ military action against Yemen’s Houthi rebels.

The announcement comes about 15 days after the US reclassified the Houthi rebels as a foreign terrorist organization. “Today, I have ordered the US military to take decisive and powerful military action against Houthi terrorists in Yemen. “They have waged a relentless campaign of piracy, violence and terrorism against American and allied ships, aircraft and drones,” Trump wrote on his Truth social media platform.

The US had said it would use “excessive lethal force” against the Houthi rebels, accusing them of disrupting shipping through the Suez Canal, the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. “The Houthi attacks on American ships will not be tolerated. We will use excessive force until we achieve our objectives,” he said. The rebels said on Sunday that at least 31 people were killed in the first US airstrikes against Yemen’s Houthi rebels since US President Donald Trump took office in January.

The Houthi rebels, who have been carrying out attacks on Israel and the Red Sea during the Gaza war, said children were among the dead. The Yemeni Houthi group initially said it had fired 18 missiles and a drone at the Red Sea “aircraft carrier ‘USS Harry Truman’ and its associated warships”.

Beijing on Monday reiterated its call for diplomacy to resolve the tensions. Mao said, “The causes of the Red Sea and Yemen issues are complex and should be properly resolved through dialogue and dialogue.”

The Iran-backed Houthi rebels in the poorest country on the Arabian Peninsula have claimed to be showing solidarity with the Palestinians by attacking Israeli and Red Sea ships during the Gaza war. Beijing last year called for an end to attacks on civilian ships in the waters, which account for most of China’s trade with the European Union.
