Parbat. The under-construction motorable bridge over the Bhurundikhola, connecting Kaski and Parbat, has remained incomplete for nine years. The construction of the bridge, which began in November 2012 with a target of completion within two years of the agreement, has not been completed due to the negligence of the contractor.
The work of this bridge, which connects Modi Rural Municipality-1, Bhukatangle, in Parbat and Annapurna Rural Municipality-8, Ramduwali, in Kaski, has not even been 10 percent complete. Although some of the bridge’s structures have been prepared on one side of the river, other work has not been completed.
The agreement to build the bridge at a cost of Rs. 61.3 million was signed. So far, Rs. 15 million has been paid by the office. The Sanjeevani Construction Company has taken over the responsibility of completing the bridge in 29 months.
The Road Division Office, Pokhara, has now taken over the responsibility of the project, for which the Road Division Office, Baglung, signed a contract agreement in 2072 BS. The people’s representatives have been pressuring them repeatedly to start the construction work. But the construction of the bridge has not picked up speed.
‘After we have raised the matter with the government agencies many times, the Road Division Office has finally started the work, but there are doubts about whether it will be completed or not. “The work has started late,” said local Rajendra Khadka.
The Road Division Office, Pokhara, has again extended the deadline until mid-Ashad and deployed construction professionals to the construction site. The bridge construction work is currently underway, informed Engineer Dhruv Pokharel, Information Officer of the office.
The office has also instructed the construction professionals to complete the work within the stipulated time. Modi Rural Municipality Chairperson Hira Devi Sharma said that the locals are forced to bear the brunt of the ongoing construction of the concrete bridge, which was started even before the formation of the local level.
She said that this problem has arisen because construction entrepreneurs have repeatedly ignored the instructions of the local level, federal parliamentarians and the concerned offices. Meanwhile, former National Assembly Speaker Ganesh Timilsina and Provincial Assembly member Bhakta Kunwar have conducted a delayed monitoring of the project, whose construction work has begun.
