Prime Minister directs to prioritize poverty alleviation

Kathmandu. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has directed the office bearers of the National Planning Commission to prioritize poverty alleviation by increasing production, productivity and entrepreneurship.

In a discussion with the office bearers including the Vice Chairman at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, Singha Durbar today on the work performance and future direction of the Commission, Prime Minister Oli, who is also the Chairman of the Commission, urged that skill development, entrepreneurship, creation of employment opportunities, large-scale production and investment in the agricultural sector be increased as the infrastructure development work is almost complete.

‘We should take the path of empowering the people. It is not enough to just provide assistance. We should go on the path of increasing production and self-reliance,’ said Prime Minister Oli. ‘We should motivate the people to be active. We should identify the work of poverty reduction and set the basis for exercising fundamental rights. We should ask the ministries to come up with concrete plans to increase production and productivity. After productivity increases, there will be a positive impact on the economy.’

He also urged them to engage in effective monitoring and evaluation of projects of national pride, development of entrepreneurship and work that will have a positive impact on service delivery and good governance. On the occasion, Vice Chairman of the Commission, Prof. Dr. Shivaraj Adhikari, briefed the meeting on the implementation of the 16th Plan, its challenges, new standards and revisions of the National Project Bank, systematic analysis of incomplete projects, new standards for project analysis, amendments to the working procedures of supplementary and special grants, etc.

He emphasized that interactions have also been held with the provinces and local levels regarding the revised standards and emphasized that the local levels should be resource-rich for the effective implementation of fiscal federalism. The discussion was attended by the Prime Minister’s Economic and Development Affairs Advisor Dr. Yubaraj Khatiwada, Chief Secretary Ek Narayan Aryal, and others.
