Bhojpur. Farmers of Lekhkarka in the district have been given training on the latest vegetable farming system along with agricultural materials. With the aim of making them economically and professionally capable, 28 leading farmers have been given information on the latest vegetable farming system along with appropriate technology.
The Micro Enterprise Development Program for Poverty Alleviation (MEDP) has provided knowledge about the vegetable farming system to farmers in coordination with the rural municipality and ward. The farmers participating in the training were also given agricultural materials including improved varieties of seeds, seedlings, plastic tunnels, etc., according to Ward Chairman of Temkemaiyung 9 Lakhkarka, Nabaraj Mangpahang. He said that the training was conducted to provide knowledge about the latest farming system to the farmers cultivating vegetables in the ward.
He said that the farmers were given information about the farming system by practicing it. “Many farmers here are cultivating vegetables,” he said. “The problem was that farmers did not have knowledge about the vegetable farming system. We have provided them with training to further encourage them to become professionals by giving them knowledge about the vegetable farming system.” A five-day program was conducted to provide practical knowledge about the vegetable farming system to the leading farmers here.
Ramadevi Rai, the vice-chairwoman of the rural municipality, informed that the rural municipality is conducting various skill-based programs to make farmers economically capable through vegetables and cash crops.
Vice-chairwoman Rai said that since Temkemaiyung rural municipality has good potential for agriculture, work is being done by prioritizing agriculture and tourism. The rural municipality is also conducting an incentive program for the cultivation of vegetables and cash crops that are suitable for the geography and soil of the region, Vice-chairwoman Rai informed. “We are encouraging farmers to engage in commercial cultivation of vegetables and cash crops,” she said. “The village council is investing in agriculture and tourism with priority.”
We are conducting various skill-based programs to connect farmers with income generation by making them professional.” Vice President Rai informed that farmers are being provided with the necessary support and skills to engage in cash and commercial vegetable cultivation, as well as goat farming, poultry farming, pig farming, beekeeping, herb farming, orange and lemon farming.
Although they have been cultivating vegetables traditionally, the farmers say that they have learned about modern farming systems through the training. Local farmer Satyadevi Rai said that since they also received agricultural materials along with the training, it will be easier to cultivate vegetables commercially in the future. She informed that during the training, she was able to learn about vegetable farming techniques as well as diseases, pests, and treatment methods.
I had been cultivating vegetables traditionally. She said, “There were many problems due to lack of knowledge about modern vegetable farming techniques. By participating in the training, I also learned about farming techniques, pests, and their treatment methods. I have made plans to further expand vegetable farming in the future by utilizing the skills I learned here.”
