Kathmandu. The heads of the US and Russian intelligence agencies have spoken by phone and agreed to maintain regular contact to ease tensions in US-Russia relations, news reports said on Wednesday.

CIA Director John Ratcliffe and the head of Russia’s foreign intelligence agency SVR Sergei Naryshkin spoke by phone on Tuesday for the first time in years, the state-run Tass news agency reported. They agreed to have “regular contacts” between their agencies to “contribute to international stability and security and reduce tensions in relations between Moscow and Washington.”

The call was the first such contact since US President Donald Trump took office, promising to end the three-year conflict in Ukraine. The call came on the same day that Ukraine supported a US proposal for a 30-day ceasefire and agreed to hold urgent talks with Russia in Saudi Arabia.

The last contact between the heads of the CIA and the SVR was in November 2022. At that time, Naryshkin spoke with then-CIA chief William Burns in Ankara.
