Kathmandu. Questions have been raised in Parliament regarding the appointment of the Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank. Criticism has increased that the government has been making appointments in a hurry in the setting of middlemen.
Speaking in the House of Representatives on Tuesday (Falgun 10), Opposition Leader Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ said that the government ministers have not been able to make any appointments on their own in the past 8 months. Prachanda said, “‘I see my colleagues in the government now boasting a lot, saying that the government did this and that. I said it then, and I still emphasize it now, that I have not seen the ministers and the Prime Minister riding two-thirds of the government’s horse, that horse has been ridden by middlemen. I do not see you making the appointments, the settings you have been making, you have been doing it. That has been done by middlemen. I have seen it happening according to the decisions made by middlemen. I want to challenge you, tell me a single appointment and a single policy in the last eight months, which does not have a middleman behind it. Just one example will do. Your meetings, committees and mechanisms look like a drama. Today, there is a middleman in the driving seat of power. I have already explained why the government led by me was removed. There are middlemen in the driving seat of power. The courage and trust of middlemen have made honest businessmen confused today. Tomorrow, you will be confused.”
Gagan Thapa has spoken in defense of the government after Prachanda accused the government of working in a middleman setting. Nepali Congress General Secretary Thapa admitted that questions are being raised about the appointments made by the government. General Secretary Thapa said that they are also closely watching the appointment of the Governor of the Nepal Rastra Bank.
He said, “When the government is making laws, everyone should benefit from it, and that benefit should not be enjoyed only by a limited number of individuals and groups. Questions have been raised repeatedly about the government’s decisions. The other day, the Honorable Deputy Prime Minister (Bishnu Prasad Poudel) took responsibility and said that, but while taking responsibility, one thing should be kept in mind. The Parliament is also watching, we are all watching, we are closely watching the appointment of the Governor, we are closely watching the appointment of the IGP. Everyone knows who is a person and who is not, in such a small country.”
The Ministry of Finance had tried to form a Governor Selection Committee in the Council of Ministers meeting held on Falgun 21. The committee has not been formed after Nepali Congress ministers said that three members should also be from the Congress.
