Kathmandu. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Urban Development Prakash Man Singh has discussed with the people’s representatives of the Valley about the plans that should be included in the upcoming budget. Today, Deputy Prime Minister Singh held discussions with the mayors and deputy mayors of Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Lalitpur districts at the Ministry of Urban Development.
In the process, the mayors and deputy mayors expressed their views on how to make the Valley a well-organized and livable city, improve the river system of the Valley, and solve the problems of garbage and traffic management.
Deputy Prime Minister Singh emphasized that all three levels of government should work together to keep the rivers flowing in the Valley clean. He said that a ‘septic tank’ campaign should be launched to make the river system of the Valley clean. He emphasized that the work of building septic tanks should be taken forward as a campaign in the valley.
‘The rivers flowing in the valley should be made clean. For that, we must embark on a campaign to build septic tanks to remove the stench that is present now. Now, septic tanks should be built in every house where new ones are being built. Wherever houses have been built, if there is no space, then septic tanks should be built even in one place for 10/15 houses,’
Deputy Prime Minister Singh said, ‘The groundwater level is decreasing in the valley. To increase it, a campaign for ground water harvesting and septic tanks must be launched. Otherwise, the river will not be clean, the stench will not go away.’ He stressed that all three levels of government should work together to keep the valley clean, neat and healthy.
Deputy Prime Minister Singh said that since he took over the Ministry of Urban Development, he has been questioning why there were weaknesses in planning despite billions of rupees being spent on Bagmati and Dhobi Khola, and that necessary work has been taken to correct them and prevent direct mixing of sewage.
During the discussion, the mayors and deputy mayors of various municipalities in the valley suggested that waste management, cleanliness and sanitation of the river, and development of urban infrastructure should be addressed in the upcoming budget. Deputy Prime Minister Singh urged the municipality to submit an action plan on the work that can be done to make the valley beautiful and livable, and said that suggestions received from the municipality will be incorporated and addressed through the budget, moving forward.
