National Assembly meeting: Government’s attention drawn to contemporary issues

Kathmandu. The lawmakers have drawn the government’s attention to contemporary issues ranging from the protest marches of pro-monarchy activists to discrimination against Dalits, teachers’ agitation, and air safety.

During the zero hour of today’s meeting of the National Assembly, Nepal Communist Party (Unified Socialist) lawmaker Uday Bahadur Bohora expressed concern over the attacks on democracy, noting that protests have been taking place in some cities of the country, including Kathmandu, for some time.

He said that the government and political parties need to correct their working style. He stressed that the government should firmly work to end the austerity measures in the country, control inflation, and promote good governance. Gomadevi Timalsina, lawmaker from the same party, mentioned that the Udayapur Cement Industry has been without leadership for a long time and that the employees have not received their salaries for months. He also drew the government’s attention to the need to immediately operate the industry.

Rasty Janamorcha MP Tul Prasad Bishwakarma, citing the increasing incidents of discrimination against Dalits, demanded that those involved in these incidents be brought to justice. He demanded that the government arrange for appropriate compensation for the victims.

MP Madan Kumari Shah urged women to become self-reliant and join the campaign to build a prosperous Nepal. MP Rajendra Lakshmi Gaire, mentioning that teachers who are sent to community schools are on strike, said that the agreements made in the past have not been implemented.

She also demanded that the demands of teachers be addressed. Nepali Congress MP Durga Kumari Gurung said that residents around Bardiya National Park are suffering from the fear of wild animal attacks and demanded the provision of wire mesh in the settlements in the park area.

Congress MP Narayan Dutta Mishra said that teachers across the country are on strike and demanded the government to find a solution to their demands through dialogue. He emphasized that stakeholders should be serious about protecting women’s rights and expanding its scope.

MP Yubaraj Sharma emphasized that for the protection and implementation of the constitution, maximum consensus should be reached among the political parties supporting it and commitment should be made to promote good governance in the country and fulfill the aspirations of the people.

MP Bhuwan Bahadur Sunar of the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Center) drew the government’s attention to the incidents that have occurred in some parts of the country. Suresh Ale Magar, a member of the same party, said that the struggle for the women’s liberation movement is still necessary.

He demanded that the government make the road from Bagbazar to Maitidevi two-way. Janata Samajwadi Party MP Mohammad Khalid drew the attention of stakeholders by saying that a Buddha Air plane landed at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu without wheels a few days ago, raising questions about air services and safe travel.

‘Such incidents also discourage the tourism sector. There was no geographical diversity and adverse weather. It is necessary for stakeholders to seriously commit to not repeating such incidents as much as possible,’ he said.
