Solukhumbu. The process for establishing an aviation fuel ‘refueling center’ at the Phaplu Airport here has been initiated. A technical team of Nepal Oil Corporation and a team including Solududhkunda Municipality Mayor Namgel Jangbu Sherpa conducted an on-site inspection on Thursday and initiated the necessary process for this.
It is expected that flights to Lukla Airport and Kathmandu will become more convenient if the ‘refueling center’ comes into operation here. Mayor Sherpa informed that the implementation process of this project has been initiated after a request was made to Nepal Oil Corporation at the initiative of Solududhkunda Municipality. He said that a ‘refueling center’ is needed to facilitate direct flights between Kathmandu-Phaplu and Phaplu-Lukla with the plan to make it a major hub for air travel.
‘After the establishment of the refueling center, it will greatly help in promoting tourism here. When air travel is affected due to adverse weather in Khumbu, tourists are forced to wait for weeks. If this center is established in Phaplu, the tourists will no longer have to wait for flights,’ said Mayor Sherpa.
Among the two airports currently operating in the district, tourists going to and returning from the Everest region are forced to wait for weeks when the weather becomes adverse. Since the weather in Lukla changes in an instant, tourists have been suffering due to the impact of air travel. It is said that if there are regular flights from Faplu, it will be easier for tourists to go to the Everest region and return to Kathmandu via Faplu.
Defense Minister Manvir Rai said that if aviation fuel can be provided at Faplu Airport, the entire tourism sector of Solukhumbu will directly benefit. He said that since there are no regular flights to Faplu, emergency rescue and air travel are being affected, attention should be paid to solving the problem.
