Kanchanpur. Only four years after the contract for blacktopping the Bank-Nayal-Budar road was awarded, the construction business has committed to moving forward with the work. Santoshi Thegim JV, which has won the contract for the road construction, has submitted a written commitment letter to the Infrastructure Development Office to blacktop the road.
The construction business was forced to come in contact after the pressure program initiated by Arjun Bahadur Saud, Ward Chairman of Krishnapur Municipality-2. Ward Chairman Saud had been demanding road blacktop for five days and had been exerting pressure by placing tables and chairs at the entrance point of the road to provide ward services. “We launched a pressure-based program after the construction business that had contracted to blacktop the road went out of contact,” he said. “We reached out to the Infrastructure Development Office and the provincial office, but despite assurances, the work was not taken forward.”
The local residents had problems commuting as the road was covered in dust and potholes. “We decided to take up the protest constructively as the locals have been putting a lot of pressure on us to blacktop the road,” he said. “After we started providing services to the ward by providing constructive pressure-based programs without causing any inconvenience to any body, construction entrepreneurs have come in contact with us and agreed to move forward with the work due to all-round pressure.”
After construction entrepreneurs started working with commitment letters to blacktop the road, the pressure-based programs have been suspended for the time being and services have been provided to the service recipients from the ward office, Ward Chairman Saud said. According to him, the construction company has started laying gravel to lay the base for blacktopping the road as per the commitment. The construction company has stated in the commitment letter sent to the Infrastructure Development Office that it will deposit the base on the road by Chaitra 20, as per the available budget for the construction work, and start the blacktop work on the road from Chaitra 21.
The Chief of the Infrastructure Development Office, Yogendra Adhikari, said that the contract deadline for blacktopping the road has been extended until Chaitra. He informed that the construction company has sent a commitment letter to blacktop the road within the extended deadline. A contract agreement was signed with Santoshi Thegim JV for the construction of the road on Shrawan 20, 2077 BS and the deadline expired in Baisakh 2081 BS. After that, the deadline has been extended until Chaitra 30, 2082 BS. So far, the progress of the road construction is only 35 percent. A contract agreement was signed for blacktopping seven kilometers of the road from Bank to Domilla at a cost of Rs. 118.6 million.
