Nuwakot. The Majhi community of Nuwakot celebrated the Ladi festival collectively for the first time on Tuesday. The festival, which was celebrated by fishermen from across the district by organizing the ‘First Ladi Festival and Nature Puja’ program, will help in the conservation of endangered species, said Tej Bahadur Majhi, the leader of the community.

‘In the past years, fishermen used to cross the river by boat, but the profession of transporting stones through tuin, suspension bridge, and concrete bridge has disappeared,’ he said. ‘The profession of making a living by catching fish has also become a greedy one now.’ The biggest festival of the Majhi community, Ladi, is celebrated every year on the third Tuesday of Falgun month.

After the Bidur Municipality in Nuwakot, Bagmati Province allocated a budget to celebrate the festival, the fishermen from across the district united and celebrated the festival collectively.

Bidur Mayor Rajan Shrestha said that the budget has been provided to collectively celebrate the culture of leaving their homes and returning to the banks of the Khola river in the past years.

Rita Majhi, central president of the Nepal Majhi Mahila Utthan Sangh and outgoing Bagmati Pradesh Sabha member, said that the mining of the Khola river has put the profession of fishermen in danger. .

He demanded that some part of the revenue collected from natural resources should be spent for the welfare of the Majhi community. He objected to the fact that the state government had only mentioned the Majhi community in the public holiday given, and said that a public holiday should be given to all castes to convey the importance of the festival.

On that occasion, an exhibition of riverside dwellings, furlungs, nets, dhadiyas, balchhis, ghaukas, hookahs, weapons, baiting, costumes, and costumes was organized. Radhika Majhi, president of the Nuwakot Majhi Mahila Utthan Sangh, said that support is expected from the three levels of government at the local level.

According to the Nepal Majhi Sangh Nuwakot, there are currently 308 women and 326 men in 111 households in Nuwakot. Their main residence is in the area around the Trishuli and Tadi rivers.
