Godavari. Local people are panicking after a gas ‘leak’ occurred during boring in the Tikathali area. After the incident, locals are discussing issues including gas exploration and storage, settlement management.
After gas leaked during boring for drinking water in the Buzurg Khola Corridor area of Tikathali, Mahalakshmi Municipality-5, arguments have started focusing on this issue. Local resident Mahesh Maharjan said that the incident of a sudden gas leak and fire breaking out after reaching a depth of about 275 meters while boring for drinking water should not be taken lightly.
According to Rajesh Kumar Rana, a member of the Tikathali Drinking Water and Sanitation Consumers Committee, considering the incident of gas leaking out while digging about 100 meters during boring, the work of extracting water through boring in the Tikathali area, which is suffering from a shortage of drinking water, has become more complicated and the responsible body needs to pay attention to this.
Member Rana said, “About 70/80 years ago, an agreement was reached between Nepal and India to establish a gas plant and land was allocated for storage in the Imadol, Tikathali and Kharibot areas of Lalitpur, but it was not implemented.” We have heard, but now, surprisingly, gas started coming out when digging the ground for water. The people of this area, who are facing water problems, are getting more worried and distressed, and the concerned parties need to think about this in time.’
Mahalakshmi Municipality-5 Ward Chairman Kapil KC said, ‘While drilling to extract drinking water in the Tikathali area, where I permanently reside, water started coming out as expected after digging about 275 meters deep. Meanwhile, the normal fire that broke out while wiring iron pipes is being installed is now being exaggerated to scare the society. Unlike what has been reported, this is a normal incident, and no one needs to panic.’ Mahalaxmi Municipality has stated that it has written to the Department of Mines and Geology to conduct the necessary study and investigation into the incident, keeping in mind the demands of the locals.
