Kathmandu. Among the Nepali telecommunications companies, Ncell, which is run by the private sector, has been increasing its market share recently. According to data provided by the regulatory body, the Telecommunications Authority, while Ncell has been increasing the number of users recently, it is likely that the government-run Nepal Telecom will lag behind.
According to the authority’s data, Nepal Telecom has lost a large number of users by the end of this year compared to the end of last year, while Ncell has gained. If we look at the number of customers, Ncell had 12.9 million users in the end of last year, but it has reached 14.7 million by the end of this year.
The customers of the government-owned Nepal Telecom Company Limited (Nepal Telecom) have reached 15.2 million by the end of this year, compared to 22 million users in the end of last year. According to the facts, Ncell has been increasing its market share as Nepal Telecom’s users have been decreasing. Even though the government is preparing to increase the public’s ownership in government-owned companies like Nepal Telecom to 25 percent, the users are not increasing significantly.
Currently, 92 percent of the telecom’s shares are owned by the government and only 8 percent by the public. At the anniversary program of Nepal Telecom held last month, Communications Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung had announced that the public’s share would now be increased to at least 25 percent.
While the number of users is decreasing, Nepal Telecom’s recent decision regarding top-ups has also become controversial. The telecom’s decision to limit recharge top-ups to less than 50, citing the large number of small transactions, did not last long after the protests.
Telecom spokesperson Hari Dhakal said that the telecom is moving forward by improving with the times. He said, “We are going to stop small transactions, but since the customer demand is low, we have continued the old top-up limit.” According to him, the telecom is focusing on quality rather than increasing the number of users. He said that the telecom is moving forward by improving with the times.
