Rukum East. Snow is a dream for some, but it is a disaster for others. It is a dream for those who go to see and play in snow, but the pain of those who live with it is different.

Rukum East, the only Himalayan district in Lumbini Province, inevitably snows once or twice a year. This year too, there was snowfall in the Himalayan and high hill areas on Friday and Saturday last week, while it rained in the lower areas. The upper areas of Sisne, Bhume and Putha Uttarganga rural municipalities of the district turned white after the snowfall.

If the Sisne Himal, which had been transformed into black stone, has turned white, then the entire Dhaulagiri range, including Putha Himal, is white. One can experience snow on a five-seven kilometer motor journey on the Lukum-Patihalna section of the Mid-Hill Highway. When you climb uphill from Patihalna on the Rukum East-Baglung border and reach Chauri Lake and Kilachan Lake, the view of Sisne Himal and Putha Himal, along with the beautiful Dhorpatan gorge, enchants people.

Domestic tourists are attracted to snow when it falls. Patihalna is now crowded with snow lovers every day. People from various places in Rukum East, Rolpa, Rukum West, Baglung, Dang, and Salyan come to play snow in this area.

Hotel entrepreneur Kismat Gharti said that some people have come from Pokhara and Butwal to play snow in Patihalna. He said that during the snowfall, the hotels are crowded with people who come to play snow. “People from far away come to stay here,” said hotelier Gharti. “There are only two cottages in Patihalna, and there is no way to accommodate guests.” But he says that the influx of domestic tourists adds to the charm of the area during snowfall.

All travelers traveling through the Mid-Hill Highway stop their vehicles at Patihalna for a moment, observe the surrounding scenery, and ‘click’ photos before proceeding on their journey. Chandra Bahadur Kunwar, who came from Rukum West, said that every year, when it snows in Patihalna, they come in groups to play in the snow. He also said that since this area is beautiful and it is possible to go to various other destinations from here, he also comes at other times, saying that he always reaches here during the snowy season.

Mostly, people return from Patihalna after playing in the snow. Some people reach Kilachan and Chauri Lake to see more beautiful views. Milan Magar of Rolpa said that from Chauri Lake, the beautiful plains of Dhaulagiri Range and Dhorpatan along with the Sisne Himal and Putha Himal are very beautiful. He informed that this Chauri area looks very beautiful when it is covered with snow in winter and when colorful flowers bloom in the rainy season.

Dilchan Pun of Bhume Rural Municipality-1 said that the arrival of domestic tourists coming to see the snow in the Patihalna area will not stop until the snow melts. He informed that domestic tourists coming from various neighboring districts including Rukum East are busy taking photos, videos, and making TikToks in Patihalna every day. Some people can also be seen enjoying themselves by throwing snow at each other. Patihalna and the surrounding area, located on the border of three districts of Rukum East, Baglung, and Rolpa, is a place with abundant tourism potential.
