‘It is necessary to allocate 30 percent of the budget to the health sector’: Minister Poudel

Gandaki. Minister for Health and Population Pradeep Poudel has said that citizens’ access to healthcare cannot be established unless investment in the health sector is increased.

At a debate session on ‘People’s Access to Healthcare’ at the 12th Nepal Literature Festival organized by the Bookworm Foundation in Pokhara, he mentioned that there is a shortage of hospitals and doctors in Nepal compared to the population.

‘Manpower has increased in the army, police, civil service, etc., but manpower has not been added in essential and sensitive sectors like health,’ Minister Poudel said. ‘Investment in health infrastructure, manpower and equipment should be increased. As per the policy and constitutional declaration, 30 percent of the total budget should be allocated for health to provide healthcare to citizens. .’

He said that some of the announcements made without ensuring the source have been challenged in their implementation. Minister Poudel said that the irregularities seen in the health insurance program should be eliminated and further systematized.

He said that preparations are being made to create 500 new doctor posts soon and issue advertisements for the examination. Minister Poudel also clarified that the government is committed to providing quality and accessible health services.

‘There is a need for comprehensive reforms in the health system. Despite policy provisions, some plans have not been implemented in practice due to lack of resources,’ he said. ‘Now, we need to find long-term solutions to the problems seen in this sector by increasing investment in health.’
