Coffee farmers in Hatuwagadhi are excited as production starts reaching foreign markets.

Bhojpur. Farmers in Bhojpur are engaged in commercial coffee farming. Farmers who were previously cultivating coffee in a general way have started commercial coffee farming after their produce started going to the foreign market.

Farmers from Sindrang, Homtang, Lungin, Lumthung, and Aamchowk rural municipality in Hatuwagadhi rural municipality of Bhojpur are cultivating it.

Local coffee entrepreneur Sunil Shrestha said that the coffee produced by the farmers here is sent to Japan and Korea via Dharan, Itahari, Biratnagar, Kathmandu.

He says that there is a demand for organic coffee in the foreign market as well. Shrestha informed that he has been collecting coffee produced in Bhojpur and selling it in external markets.

He said that about five thousand kilograms of raw coffee have been exported from here this year. He said that the amount of coffee exported from Bhojpur will increase in the coming days as many farmers are expanding their coffee cultivation.

Businessman Shrestha said that if lab tests show that it is organic, there is a greater demand in the foreign market for organic coffee produced at an altitude of 1,100 meters to 1,500 meters above sea level.

‘Recently, farmers in Bhojpur have been engaged in expanding coffee cultivation commercially,’ said businessman Shrestha. ‘The organic coffee produced here has started going to big cities in the country as well as abroad. The number of people involved in commercial coffee farming is increasing every year as the coffee produced is being sold from home.

The coffee produced by local farmers is being sold at Rs 100 per kg from home. Businessman Shrestha said that a well-grown coffee plant can produce 25 to 30 kg.

He informed that processed coffee beans are being sold at Rs 500 per kg in the city market. Shrestha said that about 200 farmers here are cultivating coffee. Rural Municipality Chairman Prem Kumar Rai said that the emphasis has been placed on its cultivation as the Hatuwagadhi area is suitable for coffee.

Chairman Rai said that an incentive program will be run for the expansion of commercial coffee farming in collaboration with the Koshi Province government.

He said that the rural municipality has also prepared to run the program in partnership with the province government as a budget of one million rupees has been allocated for the development and expansion of coffee farming.

‘Our Hatuwagadhi area is considered a good geography for coffee farming,’ said Chairman Rai. ‘Farmers are still cultivating it. We are preparing to launch incentive programs in collaboration with the provincial government for the further expansion and development of coffee farming.’

Chairman Rai said that although there was not a good market in the past, the coffee produced here is now starting to go to foreign markets.
