Kathmandu. Elon Musk, a billionaire adviser to US President Donald Trump, has said that all employees of US federal agencies must justify their work or lose their jobs.

Musk, the world’s richest person and Trump’s biggest donor, has tried to lay off non-essential government employees. “All federal employees will soon receive an email asking them to explain what they did last week. Failure to respond will be considered a resignation,” Musk wrote.

A copy of the email provided to AFP asks federal employees to “submit about five key things they did last week.” The email, from the US Office of Personnel Management (OPM), was titled “What did you do last week?” The deadline for responding was 11:59 p.m. Monday, although the message did not say that failure to do so would result in dismissal.

OPM did not immediately respond to an AFP request for comment on Saturday evening. The largest federal employee union, the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), pledged to challenge any unlawful dismissals in a statement by its national president, Everett Kelly. Kelly criticized Musk and the Trump administration for the move, calling it “a gross insult to federal employees and the critical services they provide to the American people.” “It is cruel and humiliating to force these untouchable, privileged, unelected billionaires, who have never given an hour of honest public service to millions of former soldiers in their second uniforms in the civil service, to justify their job responsibilities,” he said.

Several federal employees told AFP that their agencies had advised them not to respond to the email and to await further instructions. A doctor at the Department of Veterans Affairs who received the email told AFP, “I have a lot of work to do, I’m not going to neglect real patient care for this drama.”
