Tanahun. Lack of infrastructure in the district has been causing problems in conducting sports activities. Lack of organized playgrounds at the local level has been causing difficulties in conducting sports activities. Players are being left behind due to lack of sports infrastructure.
Dhruvraj Poudel, Head of Education Branch of Bhanu Municipality, said that there has been a problem in conducting the municipal-level President’s Running Shield competition due to the playground. Stating that despite the promise of building ‘one local level: one stadium’, the stadium has not been built yet, he stressed that the federal government should allocate budget for the construction of sports infrastructure.
The President’s Running Shield, which is to be organized at the municipal level, has been organized in the school playground by making alternative arrangements. Stating that karate is being played in a basketball court due to the lack of a playground, Nepal Karate Federation Gandaki Province President Maniraj Thapa informed that some time ago, the game was played in a basketball court located in Byas Municipality-3 under the President Running Shield operated in Damauli.
He said, “There is not a single covered hall in the district. Due to the lack of a covered hall, we are forced to play games sometimes in open fields and sometimes in basketball courts. The problem is arising because the bodies concerned for the development of the sports sector are not interested.” He said that if a well-organized covered hall can be built, it will help in the operation of games including karate.
Even the necessary mats for playing karate are not available in the district. When playing karate, we are forced to ask for mats and bring them from Gandaki Province. District Sports Development Committee Chairman Anil Pandey said that after federalization, a three-tier government was formed and the closest government, the local government, also failed to understand the sentiments of the sports sector. He said, “There is a problem in conducting sports activities due to lack of infrastructure. Although sports activities are held in Tanahun, players are starting to be left behind due to lack of infrastructure.”
Pandey said that the problem was that the Sports Ministry did not provide budget for the operation of the district-level Running Shield competition held recently in Damauli. He informed that although some budget was provided for the Running Shield in previous years, this year the budget was cut and the competition was conducted by charging Rs 25,000 as registration fee from each local level, complaining about the budget cut.
Pandey emphasized that the local level should prioritize sports infrastructure as it is difficult to conduct sports activities at various local levels in the district due to lack of infrastructure.
