Mahottari. Farmers in Bardibas municipality who were hoping for the construction of a greenhouse have been disappointed. The construction of the greenhouse, which was started six years ago, has been postponed for three years. ‘There was hope that the greenhouse would be built,’ said Suraj Singh Kushwaha of Bardibas-9, ‘but the hope died when the construction was stopped.’ Kushwaha said that the construction of the greenhouse, which started in 2075 BS, was not completed because the municipality did not prioritize it.
The municipality had started the construction of the greenhouse in 2075 BS. Farmers complain that the people’s representatives elected in the 2079 BS local elections have not shown interest. The construction of a greenhouse was started within the ‘Model Agro Village’ area between Bardibas-2, 6 and 8
The greenhouse, which was started at a total estimated cost of Rs 220 million, has the capacity to store 3,000 metric tons of agricultural produce, according to the cost estimate. ‘Our crops are not getting value now,’ said Ram Vilas Singh, a farmer from Bijalpura, Bardibas-12. ‘If the greenhouse had been built, we would have been able to take the mangoes that ripened in last Shrawan to the market now and get a good price.’
Mayor Prahlad Chhetri said that the public’s concerns about why the construction work that had started was stalled were not justified. He said, “Since this is an ambitious plan with a large amount of money, the construction has not been able to proceed in the recent days due to lack of necessary budget.” Chhetri said that the work will be carried out as soon as the federal and provincial governments provide support for the construction of the greenhouse.
The external structure of the greenhouse has been constructed. The municipal executive office has stated that Rs 50 million has been spent so far. There is 84 bighas of land in a single plot in Bardibas-2, 6 and 8 wards allocated by the municipality for the operation of the Mayor’s Agriculture Program. The construction of the greenhouse has started within that land.
The municipality has stated that a ‘Model Agro Village’ model agricultural site will be built under the Bardibas Agriculture Program. It is stated that the agriculture of the archival system will be managed from here. “We include all the farmers of the city in the Bardibas Agriculture Program,” said Mayor Chhetri. “Which farmer is planting which crop in what area? How much can it be produced? The aim of the program is to establish records of this and also ensure the market for the produced crops.”
