Myagdi. The Kaihyolong Cave located in Gharpajhong Rural Municipality-3 of Mustang has fallen into disrepair. Kaihyolong Cave, located on the banks of the Syang River at the entrance to Jomsom, has become deserted due to lack of infrastructure and publicity.
Syang resident Devendra Thakali said that the number of tourists who visit Kaihyolong Cave in Mustang, which is visited by more than three hundred thousand tourists annually via the Syang River bridge, is negligible.
‘Despite being at the entrance to Jomsom, the importance and special features of Kaihyolong Cave have been neglected due to the lack of publicity and a well-organized trekking route leading to it,’ he said. ‘If a well-organized trekking route leading to Kaihyolong Cave and tourism promotion programs were implemented, the stay of tourists coming to Mustang could have been extended. .’
In the Thakali language, Kaihyolo means unmarried and Ng is called a den. Thakali said that the Kaihyolong Cave was named because it was a place for unmarried lamas to meditate and practice penance.
There are three rooms inside the cave. The materials used by lamas for cooking and meditation in ancient times can be observed in the cave. The cave is located on the wall of a mountain on the banks of the Syangkhola. The cave is reached after a 10-minute walk from the motorable bridge of Syangkhola.
Kiran Sapkota, former ward secretary of Syang, said that Kaihyolong Cave could become a research topic for those studying the development of human civilization.
He shared his experience of feeling strange seeing the structure and location of the cave. Sapkota responded that even though it looks like a small hole in the middle of the mountain from the outside, once inside, you feel like you are at home.
The Janakalyan Youth Club has built a 20-meter-long hiking trail with a railing from the banks of Syangkhola to the cave. It is necessary to build a hiking trail of about 500 meters from the motorable bridge over Syangkhola to the bottom of the cave. Currently, one has to walk along the river bank to reach the cave.
Bir Prasad Thakali, ward member of Gharpajhong Rural Municipality-3, informed that a short-distance hiking trail has been envisioned to connect Jomsom’s Puthang Airport, Shintamani Hotel, Kaihyolong Cave, and Kichithang Suspension Bridge to Syang Village.
According to the aforementioned vision, the rural municipality has constructed a 120-meter-long suspension bridge in Kichithang, constructed a Manashanti Park in Syang, and operated a sauna bath in Syang Khola.
